BOOK

Preparing Parish Liturgies: A Guide to Resources
Rita Thiron

The starting point of all liturgical preparation is the texts of the liturgical rites themselves. The first part of the book introduces the reader to all the liturgical books, providing background material for each one, as well as a detailed description of the contents, down to the paragraph number level, where needed. To understand the texts of the rites in their proper context requires knowledge of the “legislative” sections of the liturgical documents, and so a further chapter introduces the Instructions and Directories that govern the rites, as well as relevant encyclicals, pastoral letters, and guidelines.

The second part of the book brings all this information to bear on working through the actual preparation of liturgical celebrations for each feast and season of the liturgical year, as well as for all the sacramental occasions of parish life. An appendix offers thirty-three pages of useful worksheets and templates for liturgy preparation.

“Steeped in excellent liturgical theology and rooted in outstanding pastoral praxis and aids, this guide is up to date, concise, and better than any Cliff Notes on the liturgical documents. Mrs. Thiron establishes herself as a living encyclopedia of liturgical details and texts. When planning a liturgy, one can only hope he or she stands on ‘so firm a foundation!’”

Reverend Bill Wegher, Holy Redeemer Church, Burton. Michigan.

Statistics compiled by the National Catholic Partnership on Disability suggest that in any given parish nearly 20% of parishioners may suffer from some form of disability. How can parish leadership ensure that they feel welcomed and included in the liturgical assembly and how can their gifts be used in ministry? This resource assists parish liturgy teams to explore all these issues, offering such practical tools as checklists to assess parish accessibility and inclusion, information on low gluten hosts and mustum, and a full guide to available resources.
